117CHINA COUNCIL FOR THE PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONAL TRADEChapter IOverview of the Development of China’s Exhibition Industry in 2020 and Prospect in 2021Based on the major events of China’s exhibition industry in 2020 and the fi rst-hand survey data, this Chapter briefl y reviews the overall operation of China’s exhibition industry, in 2020 and presents an outlook of the development prospect in 2021. I. Development Trend of China’s Exhibition Industry in 2020 In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread around the world, and the global exhibition industry, including China, was severely affected. China’s exhibition industry thoroughly implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches and instructions on coordinating and promoting the prevention & control of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic & social development. The whole industry resumed work and production in an orderly manner, accelerated the transformation, upgrading and innovative development of exhibition industry, played the important role of the exhibition industry in expanding opening-up, increasing social employment, and stimulating consumption growth, and helped to stabilize the basis of foreign trade and foreign investment, presenting the following fi ve development trends in general.(I) The domestic exhibition industry realized a safe and orderly resumption Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the scale of various exhibition events in China decreased signifi cantly compared with the previous year. According to incomplete statistics, among the exhibitions whose area information has been collected, 1,984 economic and trade exhibitions were held in China in 2020, a year-on-year decrease of 44.1%; the total exhibition area was 73.08 million square meters, a year-on-year decrease of 44.0%; more than 3,000 exhibitions were affected in China. Among them, the number of service industry exhibitions dropped the most, with a year-on-year decrease of 46.6%; the area of specialized exhibitions dropped the most, with a year-on-year decrease of 56.8%.Although the exhibition industry was severely impacted by the pandemic in 2020, China’s exhibition industry has continued to resume exhibitions and operations in a safe and orderly manner. On July 3, 2020, relevant ministries and commissions jointly issued Guiding Opinions of the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Health Commission on the Normalization of the Prevention and Control of the NCP in Exhibition Events to further standardize the normalized prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic in exhibition events, ensuring that all exhibition events could be carried out in a scientifi c, stable, safe and orderly manner. Based on the needs of pandemic prevention and control in exhibition events, various localities have successively introduced measures to promote the development of the exhibition industry, and accelerated the promotion of online and offl ine integration of exhibitions, which to a
