Since the 1950s, there has been an exponential increase in the scale of global plastic production and use. Most plastics rapidly become waste because of their short lifespan, and most plastic waste leaks into the environment without proper treatment. A sizable amount of it ends up in the oceans, accumulating in various marine ecosystems in unignorable quantities. If no intervention is made, the inflow and stock of marine plastics will keep growing. Marine plastic pollution has received attention from global environmental governance processes.
