Recent challenges have included the global semiconductor shortage and other supply chain issues triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as events in the Gulf and Ukraine. Most recently, trade issues have arisen due to swift U.S. trade policy changes and the imposition of tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China. These tariffs, along with potential retaliatory measures, pose a risk to the MedTech sector due to its complex supply chain, which relies heavily on offshore manufacturing.1 The result is likely to be increased costs for medical devices, negatively affecting healthcare and reducing sales outside of the U.S.2 Authored by IQVIA MedTech experts, this paper explores the potential impact of tariffs on the Canadian MedTech market and outlines strategies for manufacturers to consider. Key steps include undertaking scenario and sensitivity analyses, as well as formulating strategic plans with market insights and competitive intelligence. While Canada is used as a case study, the recommendations apply equally to MedTech companies in other regions. The authors propose a range of short- and long-term strategies to help companies build competitive advantages as they navigate the rapidly evolving global MedTech landscape.Potential impact of new tariffs on MedTech As of the time of writing, the Trump administration has imposed a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. On April 2nd, U.S. “Liberation Day” introduced high tariffs globally, with the U.S. implementing a 10% baseline tariff on all countries. Customized higher tariff rates are being applied to 60 countries where the U.S. has significant trade deficits. This includes cumulative additional tariffs on imports from China, now totaling an additional tax of 104%. For European Union imports, the tariff stands at 20%, and 25% on steel and aluminum. In response, countries including Canada and China have retaliated with tariffs on U.S. imports, creating increased uncertainty across global markets as the situation continues to unfold.
